Custom 80/20 Truck-Bed Drawers: Lightweight, Modular, and Built to Last

At Rocky Mountain Motion Control, we love bringing our clients' creative ideas to life. Recently, we worked closely with a client to design and assemble a custom truck-bed drawer system using the 80/20 modular framing system. The client had already built a roof rack out of 80/20 and loved its lightweight, versatile design. Naturally, they wanted to extend the same modular approach to their truck-bed storage to keep their recovery gear and other items organized, secure, and protected from the elements.

Designing and Assembling the Ultimate Truck-Bed Drawers

The project began with a collaborative design session where we helped the client refine their concept, take precise measurements, and optimize the layout for strength and functionality. Their goal was to maximize the utility of their truck bed while keeping their gear safely stored. Since the addition of a rooftop tent made the truck bed partially exposed, the drawers also had to be weather-resistant.

Using 1" x 1" black 80/20 profiles, we built a strong yet lightweight frame, with ABS Haircell panels providing a sleek and durable finish. The base of each drawer was constructed from aluminum to balance strength with weight savings. Once fully assembled at our shop, the drawers extended an impressive 5 feet and could support up to 500 lbs—ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Overcoming Design Challenges

During the design and assembly process, we encountered a challenge: the height of the truck’s tailgate was slightly too high for the original concept. Thanks to the flexibility of 80/20, we quickly adapted the design by incorporating adjustable feet, ensuring smooth operation and proper clearance.

Built to Withstand the Elements

To enhance durability, we integrated a waterproof HDPE panel top. Not only does this protect the gear from rain and snow, but it also creates a strong, functional surface that can support weight—ideal for standing or loading additional items.

For added security, we installed locking key latches to keep the drawers securely closed. Whether parked at a campsite or in the city, the client can rest easy knowing their gear is protected.

Client Installation

Once fully assembled and tested at our shop, the client transported the system and installed it into their truck. Thanks to the lightweight modular nature of 80/20, installation was straightforward, allowing them to securely mount the system without any permanent modifications to their vehicle.

The Final Product

The end result was a sleek, modular, and heavy-duty storage solution that seamlessly integrated with the client’s existing 80/20 roof rack. The 5-foot extension provides easy access to gear, while the 500-lb weight capacity ensures maximum utility. From recovery gear to miscellaneous tools and equipment, the client now has a custom, durable, and organized storage system designed specifically for their needs.

Why 80/20?

The beauty of 80/20 modular framing lies in its adaptability and strength. Whether you're designing a roof rack, drawers, or any other custom solution, its lightweight aluminum construction and ease of assembly make it a go-to choice for innovative projects. At Rocky Mountain Motion Control, we specialize in designing and assembling custom solutions so our clients can take their vision from paper to reality.
